The sun was just beginning to come up as I found a place to park. Mike Johnson, waveski designer and manufacturer was there, as well as a collection of his buddies. As usual when they saw my antiquated old Sabre they descended upon me and tried to talk me into a waveski. I told them the same thing I always tell them, "if you would like to sponsor me and give me a boat then I would be happy to use it." That always shuts them up :-) It was a fairly cool early morning, but the waves were going off with a consistent six feet, so I grabbed my boat off of the car and launched. As I fought my way out through the surf it became very apparent just how much I had overindulged in the fruitcake over the holidays. I caught some very nice waves and got some great rides. When I came in I met a couple of other friends who had just showed up. By then the sun was out and things were warming up. It was going to be a beautiful day. I went out a second time and got some more nice rides. In the process I capsized twice. Each time I resorted to the trusty Pawlata roll as the surf was large and consistent, and I was getting pretty tired. When I had had enough I came back in and warmed up with some hot coffee I had brought along. I really hate birthdays, but as this one goes, I would have to say that this was a pretty good way to celebrate turning 48! I packed up my stuff and head home to greet my family and they were just climbing out of bed. Southern California may not be a great place for a kayaker to live, but it does have it's moments -- especially this time of year when most of the tourists have gone home and left the beaches to us locals.
