Paddlers,
I am trying to read as much as I can on different types of rolls in advance
of getting a lesson in the Spring. I am intrigued by one I read about,
called, the Pawletta roll. I am looking for illustrations of this roll,
feedback on it, etc. It looks easier to learn than the standard sweep roll,
which I tried many years ago in a whitewater kayak and was not able to do.
thanks, Marsanne

Check my web site for rolls and links to instruction and descriptions.

The above web site has links to the Pawlata roll. In particular:
http://www.redbraes.co.uk/roll/rolling4.htm#teachingrolls

The Pawlata is a roll that is useful as an introduction to rolling, but not
one that you want to rely on. With a Euro paddle, the set up is more than
its worth. A Greenland style paddle, once you're used to sliding stokes
and stuff, is more readily amenable to the Pawlata or the Standard Greenland
Roll, which is very similar.

Once you've learned the Pawlata, you'll want to move to the Short Pawlata
and then to the screw roll. The latter doesn't require any hand position
changes in the set up. The Pawlata gets you started and allows you to
develop the basic techniques. Once there, move on.

Good luck!

Mike

While what you say about the Pawlata is mostly true, I would like to add
that I occasionally use it in the surf after I have been brutally hammered by
a large wave and I am out of air and need to come up now! While my screw roll
is a pretty sure thing, with the Pawlata you get so much leverage that even a
really sloppy (and desperate) roll will bring you up.
I also generally resort to the Pawlata when I'm rolling big wide
sit-on-tops, and doubles. Again, for the extra leverage it provides.

Thank you all very much.
Marsanne (In Baton Rouge, who went in the Mississippi River with Larry
Koenig yesterday..thus, the need to be able to roll! It's like a big lake
with a current, and it's like a magnet for me....)

G'Day,

I'ld like to advocate the Pawlatta roll a little more strongly for sea
kayaking. As a rolling novice its my one truly bombproof roll that works
every time in a variety of weather conditions, surf and states of
exhaustion! My standard practise while learning other rolls, braces or
surfing methods is to try the new technique and if it fails then use the
Pawlatta to return to the surface. Its reliability makes a useful standby
for learning new techniques without the inconvenience of exiting the
cockpit. I'm guessing it would not be very good for whitewater but find it
extremely useful in seakayaking.

All the best, PeterO

Marsanne,

Check out Derek Hutchinson's book on rolling. He goes into a lot of detail
on how to learn the Pawletta.
