>>>>>Every year we paddle through acres and acres of kelp. Does anyone know if kelp is edible? If yes, how do you fix the stuff? Brad Crain<<<<< I believe the book "Kayak Cookery" by Linda Daniel has recipes for cooking kelp. Be careful where you harvest it, though, if the local waters may be contaminated. You're in Oregon so I imagine you're talking bull kelp. As far as I know all kelps and seaweeds are edible but there are numerous web sites and books in the subject. I rather like bull kelp as a salad, but especially as hot pickles. It can be eaten raw right off the bed if you care to, or dried & used instead of salt (so-so). It's good for you as well. Certain seaweeds and kelps host a number of small but edible crabs too, but I have no personal experience with them.
