A friend of mine bought a kayak company near St. Augustine, Florida (he grew up in Jacksonville). While it's not on the gulf, he might be a good reference. I kayaked in some of the marshes and out the inland waterway to the ocean from where he is located and really had fun. Lots of fast and expensive boats, however. The rules of the road are quite a bit different! His website is: http://www.coastalkayaks.com/ - you can probably find his email or phone number there. Bill Jackson's might also be a good resource. It's a big outdoor retail store who might also know about the gulf paddling.
