Peter O: I have used a Sangean ATS 505 SSB short wave radio for a while now. The radio is sold through Dick Smith Electronics: http://www.dse.com.au/, and search Sangean. Be sure to get the roll out wire aerial as well, this really improves reception. Do not buy the lesser ATS 404, which I do not think has the SSB tuning facility. The weather schedules and frequencies are found on the Bureau of Meteorology website: http://www.bom.gov.au/marine/marine_weather_radio.shtml They only read the forecast you are interested in once, so be ready at the schedule time, and be sure to use the earphones and have paper and pencil ready. I keep the radio, printed weather sched times, aerial, notepad and pencil in a plastic school lunchbox, which goes in a dry bag. I wouldn't head off on a long trip without it, although the radio is heading off into Bass Strait this weekend without me!
