Some of us are looking into an unguided 10 day kayak trip on the Yukon
river, paddling in seakayaks, from Whitehorse to Dawson (I could have those
reversed--but we'll be launching from whichever one is up-stream!) starting
in early-to-mid July. Can anyone on the list done who has done this trip
share any suggestions regarding transportation (so far, we're looking at
$200 each to shuttle the 400 mile return trip back to the starting point),
kayak rental places (since we will be flying in), what the conditions are
like, hazards [whether in the water or from bears/cougars/wolves (or
mosquitoes!) etc.], required portages, camps, and perhaps additional
sources of information? Are we crazy to do this unguided (given that none
of us has been there before--we are reasonable proficient paddlers)??? Any
information will be much appreciated!

Hi Evan. I drove up there a few years ago. It took two long days to drive
from Vancouver BC to Whitehorse and maybe another five hours to get to
Dawson City. I brought a canoe with me but I didn't do any paddling on the
Yukon River.

I went in early July and it was very buggy (mosquitoes and horse flies).
I've heard that the end of August, early September is better bug wise. The
bonus of going earlier is the 20 plus hours of daylight.

Here's a link that may prove useful. http://www.paddles.com/users/

If you go you have to stop at Braeburn Lodge for their world famous cinnamon
buns! Amazing! (It's about 200km past Whitehorse)

Good luck!

You need to check about bringing your food supplies from the US into
Canada. Sometimes they refuge to let you bring more than three days worth of
your own food and insist you buy your food in Canada.
A lot of inexperienced people do the Yukon each year so you should be
able to do it without a guide.
I have not run that section of the Yukon but I have run it farther down
stream and it is extremely silty so you will need to camp near tributaries
so you can have a source of clean water.
You will encounter tons of bugs so Be Prepared!

Have fun
Bob
