In Germany there are the time honored traditions of starting, "Anpaddeln", 
and ending, "Abpaddeln", the paddling season with a celebratory paddle 
session. Some of us used to perform the latter on December 31 and the former 
on January 1st ... unless the water happened to be too hard on the day (which 
happened VERY rarely).
