[Paddlewise] Launching in Dumping Surf

Here's an angle on launching in dumping surf. I have just returned from a
trip which required waiting out some big surf for 2 days, then breaking out
through 2 metre plus dumpers. One paddler, the most capable in the group,
rolled under 8 times before getting out. I followed a lifetime surf
lifesaver along the beach to a channel between rocks, dampened by kelp, and
only had to deal with spilling breakers under one metre.
The point is, have a good look at what is happening, and read the surf for
20 minutes or so before deciding on tactics. Be prepared to get off the
beach and wait for as long as it takes inside the break for a suitable lull.
I don't think you should ever tie yourself to a boat in the surf. Take off
all paddle leashes. Stow all strings and leads. Put your hat in the day
hatch, combine maximum paddling power with good luck, and you're OK, mostly.
PT.
