Hi All-

Mark posted about jet skiers:

“Currently we recommend tracking these dangerous Jet
Skiers back to their launch sites, recording their
identifying numbers and notifying the appropriate
authorities.”

2 summers ago, there was a rash of jet ski attacks on
kayakers in the Hudson near Manhattan. Eventually a
group of kayakers was jumped by the team of
miscreants, and we were able to record the hull
numbers of the boats. We then registered a complaint
with local police force in New Jersey, where they had
launched.

Of course, since the police hadn’t witnessed the
incident they couldn’t do anything. But they were able
to find out who was responsible, tracked them down &
gave them a serious warning and then the police showed
up at the launch spot (Hazzard’s Ramp) and made a
point of checking all registrations and letting the
jet skiers know that this was not acceptable behavior.
The attacks stopped.

Not a lot of fun to have several nasty looking jet
skiers pound you with wakes. And they were real upset
when we yelled at them that we would call the police.
Like they thought what they were doing was just good
fun.

Have a safe paddling season-

Jack Gilman
