G'Day, I promised to ask about references for the Pilates exercises. Have been away for a week but got back to the gym today and the instructor strongly recommended an author called "Brooke Silva". She was not sure of the title but thought it was something like "The Pilates Method". The other instructor recommended using Pilates exercise video's when I was travelling (which seems to happen a lot these days). He started Pilates about 18 months ago because his back was giving him serious grief (sitting and walking had become painful). He's been preparing for his first marathon these last 5 months and credits his physio's guidance through exercises including Pilates for the drastic improvement. I think it's "The Pilates Body: The Ultimate at-Home Guide to Strengthening, Lengthening, and Toning Your Body--without Machines by Brooke Siler" Paul >recommended an author called "Brooke Silva". She was not sure of the title Peter, I attempted Pilates with a book and thought I understood the method. A class revealed to me that I had it all wrong. The breathing which is very different from yoga is critical to isolating muscules and tough to learn without an instructor's hand on your gut. I doubt you can get it without live instruction. jimH *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s). G'Day, James, I 100% agree that it would be difficult to learn Pilates without a live instructor, especially the use of abdominal muscles and the method of breathing. For those of us who can't attend lessons regularly, a book or video may be a useful additional facility. I certainly hope so. And thanks Paul for correcting the author and title spelling - the instructor was between classes, in a rush and working from memory. She was very enthusiastic about the book.
