When car shopping 10 yrs ago I called the service dept. to check up on 
the salesman's claims re the factory roof rails.  The Srvc Mgr told me 
that I could indeed put a canoe on, but that he wouldn't because of the 
wind.  They had had a car (wagon) in a couple of years earlier where the 
wind had gotten under the canoe and pulled the roof rails out of the 
roof "Just like zippers."  The repair included a new roof for the car.  $$$$
