Doug, I lived in the area for a couple of years. The unique thing about that lake is how fast the wind comes up and can turn it from calm to extremely rough. At times it would be a great place to practice storm paddling. Stay close to shore and you shouldn't have any problems. BTW, If you haven't already done so, learn to reenter your kayak on the water. Also, start learning a roll. It's my opinion that without a roll to cool off now and then, that people will dress for the air, instead of the water. Welcome to the sport. It's the most enjoyable one that I can think of. If you get into the whitewater end of it, there is a great river close to your house (the Yuba, classIII, IV or V. take your pick, a half hour away).
