Bob, I opted out of Pyramid for just that reason - that the winds can be a bit scary. I used to camp out there when I was much younger and found it to be one of my favorite places to visit. I did visit the hot springs at the north end but I understand that area is now off limits thanks to vandalism. We ended up doing a two day paddle on Lake Spaulding instead. Set at 5000' feet with a fabulous backdrop of the Donner Pass portion of the Sierra, it really was quite magnificent. We had some wind on Sunday but no real challenges. There are a number of primitive boat in campgrounds with million dollar views. Where the Yuba River enters the lake you could see three falls and with the snow melt in full swing it was quite the show. There were more canoes on the lake than power boats also - another bonus.
