Here in NJ a popular paddling venue is Round Valley Reservoir which now
fills what was a circular valley formed by a massive magma flow during the
Triassic. You can do a 20+ mile circumnavigation of it. Because it is
circular, storms or wind events moving into it become magnified and it can
go from dead calm to raging fury in a matter of minutes.
The state has installed three large strobe lights on towers around the
lake to give some warning. You are required to get off or into shelter
when they go off. There have been fatalities.
