Hello all,

I have been asked to help come up with some definitions of various
types of kayaks for the Great Rivers Marathon
(http://www.greatriversmarathon.org), a 26.6 mile race that will be
taking place on the Mississippi this coming September. The organizers
aren't sure how to categorize the various kayaks and would like a
short description and if possible a small picture of that type of
boat.

I have no idea what the difference between these boats might be so
any help would be appreciated.

I am also not sure where they are getting these classes from, so
maybe there are some better ways of differentiating such as: K1
Racing Kayak, Sea Kayak (over 16'), Recreational Kayak (under 16').

Anyone wanna try 26 miles in a rodeo boat?

K-1	Sea Kayak Recreational
K-1	Solo Kayak
K-1	Kayak Downriver Open
K-1	Kayak Touring
K-1	Kayak Unlimited
K-2	Tandem Sea Kayak
K-2	Tandem Kayak Unlimited
K-3	Tandem +1 Kayak Unlimited

-Patrick

Patrick asked about classifying kayaks for a race.

The San Juan Challenge makes use of tables come up with by the sound
rowers.
It's the best I've seen for classifying kayaks. You end up with 3
classes.
High Performance, Fast, and regular sea kayaks. Their formula
encompasses any one
person kayak be it a folder, a traditional sea kayak, or a surf
ski/racing kayak.
http://www.soundrowers.org/yakclass.htm

If doing it without those classifications, and you expected a large turn
out.
I would be likely to do
Any kayak/surf ski over 18',
Plastic kayaks 15' to 18'
Plastic kayaks up to 15'
Composite kayaks under 16'
Composite kayaks 16' to 18'.
