Is anybody familiar with the Kelty Noah 9 or 12 wing tarps. I'm thinking
of purchasing one and would like any opinions first.

Thanks,

Our paddling club has one and we use it for gatherings in hot weather.
There's nothing like it. It makes unbearable days bearable, especially if
there's a nice breeze going. It takes a couple of people to set up, but I
recommend it. Marsanne

Sorry if this is a double post...appears to have not gone out the first time...

This isn't exactly the same thing but thought you might be interested in
this one too - it is a 17 x 17 rainfly/tarp (no poles included) - $60. As
usual, no association with anyone involved in this product....

If you're looking for something a little bigger, 18' X 17' look at
Northwest River Supplies' NRS River Wing

I own a 9, and like it for ease of setup, and no poles underneath. It is
not so good in strong wind and rain, because the "aerodynamic" shape allows
rain to swoop under the edges, unlike what happens in a conventional
rectangular tarp. Even if you anchor the windward corner close to the
ground, because the tarp is set _corner_ to the wind/rain instead of _edge_
to the wind/rain, you get less protection than with a same-size rectangular
beast.

But, as a sun shelter, and for light rain, it is great. Also like the light
grey color, because it transmits a lot of light.

Dave,

Thanks for the info. Yours was the deciding opinion. Since rain is not a
big factor in Southern CA but sun protection is---I think I found what I
need and your opinion confirms it.

Again thanks,

Steve Holtzman

subject: [Paddlewise] Coaming modification
Date: Mon, 12 May 2003 10:59:51 -0600
Thanks to all the advice from folks on Paddlewise, the refurbishment
of my 10 year old ocean cockpit Pintail is coming along nicely. So
far I've filled the few deep gel coat scratches, replaced the foot
braces with a block of angled minicel fitted against the forward
bulkhead, and replaced all the deck lines and bungies.

I had it out this weekend and everything fit well --- except the
coaming behind the seat. When I try to lay back on the rear deck,
the sharp edge of the coaming cuts into my back (the coaming is not
recessed into the deck). I tried to pad the area with closed cell
foam, but that doesn't really help much --- It compresses too easily.
I'm considering grinding away the hard 90 degree edge of the coaming
(at the back of the cockpit) and then fiberglassing over the area to
create more of a 45 degree bevel. Any other (lest drastic) ideas
would be appreciated.

Also, I'm considering replacing the stock seat with one made from
minicell. When I do this, I'd like to lower the seat a bit as well
but this would make laybacks even harder given the current state of
the coaming.

Brian
