My wife likes to swim a lot and gave me a tip that has totally won me over
regarding waterproof watches. The biggest problem we've found is the watch
losing it's waterproofness after changing the battery. And even if the
case it totally sealed after the battery replacement, the warm
higher-humidy air that "fills" the watch can often condense at lower
temperatures, such as on--or in--the water. It really not the fault of the
watch as much as the humidity in the air when the watch was last opened.
So all we do is buy a cheapo "waterproof to 100 meters..." watch, the kind
they sell in the large department stores for around $10, then when the
battery wears out, we toss it and buy another. I generally get two years
or more per $10 watch, which works out to something like 40 cents per month
-- not bad!

The best deal I've found on watches for kayaking have been at www.campmor.com.

I bought a Timex there a couple of years ago, on sale for less than $20.00.
I clipped if to my PFD where it stays for year round paddling in Lake
Michigan. No problems. Has stop watch function etc. Great paddling watch.

I just checked their recent "sale" email I get, none listed--probably will be
in a week or so. Their catalog has some on sale.

No affiliation....etc.

For paddling it's hard to find better bang-for-the-buck value than Timex.
Regular Timex Ironman from superstore for $ 20-30 with rating 100m protects
from a short-time shallow immersion - from my experience. I am not sure how
it will work for divers, though.

I have one that my wife bought for $6.37 at Walmart. I have been
using it for 3 or 4 years now. Kayaking, hiking, riding my Harley, and every
day use. Still on the original battery. When it quits, I will have to fork
out another seven bucks. The brand does not matter as it changes from time to
time, but the watches take a licking and keep ticking. No condensate either.

This thread reminds me of a great Mike Royko column several years ago
comparing a multi-thousand dollar Rolex with a cheap throwaway watch. The
point of the column was that the cheap throwaway did more than the Rolex and
when the battery ran out, you threw it sway and bought a new watch that had
more features than the old one.

I don't have this problem, since I reseal the watch after a battery
change. I use the silicone grease that I got for my underwater
camera housing (available as any camera shop that sells them or a
decent dive shop). I take out the O-ring and clean it and the
groove in the watch case where it sits. I then glop some grease
on it and reseat.

One thing to watch out for with your diving watches is getting it nice
and warm while in the sun and out of the water and then dunking it in
cold water. The "O" rings will shrink and you can get some water into
you watch. I found out about this the hard way by wearing my watch on
the dive boat on the way to the dive site. After the dive I had a good
case of fog on the watch face of my brand new watch. Live and learn.
BTW, we were diving in Lake Michigan in the spring north of Traverse
City, MI. Cold water!

Buy a $10.00 watch & throw it away? Sort of like a disposable camera eh?

Better I think to buy a better watch, that can handle the grief you intend to
put it through. Kind of seems like a waste to me. But I don't like much of
anything DESIGNED to wear out so I'll HAVE to buy another.

However disposable diapers are another matter entirely.

When replacing a battery in my watch(Casio) I put vasoline on the oring
before remounting the back. I have never seen condensation form under the
crystral after doing so.
