OK, as noted in my recent pegleggin' posts - I'm 6'8", 250 lbs - paddling a
CD Storm that I'm beginning to think is flat out too small. Last year, I
was thinking of building a stitch-n-glue boat - with increased volume to
handle my size. I looked at the triples from both CLC and Pygmy pretty
hard - I have three children ages 3, 5, and 7 - and the extra room would
allow some paddling partners now - and into the future. But...this boat
would be used (primarily I suppose) as a single. The Pygmy site says this
is doable - noting that some large paddlers (280 lbs +) use it as a
single. CLC does not recommend using their triple as a single. Paddling
will be mostly day trips, flat inland water (some Great Lakes trips) and
some group kayak/camping trips (e.g., Voyageurs National Park or
Mississippi River trips). No solo coastal expeditions are the calendar for
the near future.

My inquiry is less about Pygmy vs CLC or any other brand - but rather the
whole concept of a really big single (aka triple).

Do any PWers have an opinion on this? Ideally, I'd have multiple boats -
but financially, I'm going to be lucky to have one new boat.

I like some of the +sized factory boats that are available - but there is
simply no way I'll have the $2200 - $3000 to spend on a new boat.

Thanks for any comments.
Keith

Woof. That's a lot of boat for one paddler to yard around, especially in a
wind. That said, it is a cost-effective solution to the need to run the
kids out for a paddle, you in the center hole. On the types of waters you
describe, might be OK. In 15 knots of wind, you would be very taxed to keep
it on track, rudder or not.

Off-PW, Keith and I have discussed further mods to his cockpit on the Storm.
I think his peglegging may stem from lack of blood flow to extremities, but
he does not report the characteristic tingling it produces. Maybe some sort
of non-nerve-related muscle lock?

I recall experiencing sudden, complete leg failure, with no advance warning
on exiting to shore once, so I wonder if it is his sciatica nerve.

You can't go wrong having a triple around, in any case -- very versatile
boat.

Keith, I don't know about paddling a triple, but I own a Necky Tesla NM,

which is about 1 foot longer and 1 inch wider than the CD Storm. (length-17'

10", width-25") I'm 5'11", 200 lbs., and the boat is very roomy for me, so it

would probably be quite comfortable for you. You may be able to pick up a

used model for a reasonable price. Mike
