Doug,
I lived in the area for a couple of years. The unique thing about that lake
is how fast the wind comes up and can turn it from calm to extremely rough.
At times it would be a great place to practice storm paddling. Stay close to
shore and you shouldn't have any problems. BTW, If you haven't already done
so, learn to reenter your kayak on the water. Also, start learning a roll.
It's my opinion that without a roll to cool off now and then, that people
will dress for the air, instead of the water. Welcome to the sport. It's the
most enjoyable one that I can think of. If you get into the whitewater end
of it, there is a great river close to your house (the Yuba, classIII, IV or
V. take your pick, a half hour away).
Regards,
Bob

Bob,

I opted out of Pyramid for just that reason - that the winds can be a bit
scary. I used to camp out there when I was much younger and found it to be
one of my favorite places to visit. I did visit the hot springs at the north
end but I understand that area is now off limits thanks to vandalism.
We ended up doing a two day paddle on Lake Spaulding instead. Set at 5000'
feet with a fabulous backdrop of the Donner Pass portion of the Sierra, it
really was quite magnificent. We had some wind on Sunday but no real
challenges. There are a number of primitive boat in campgrounds with million
dollar views. Where the Yuba River enters the lake you could see three falls
and with the snow melt in full swing it was quite the show. There were more
canoes on the lake than power boats also - another bonus.

Here in NJ a popular paddling venue is Round Valley Reservoir which now
fills what was a circular valley formed by a massive magma flow during the
Triassic. You can do a 20+ mile circumnavigation of it. Because it is
circular, storms or wind events moving into it become magnified and it can
go from dead calm to raging fury in a matter of minutes.
The state has installed three large strobe lights on towers around the
lake to give some warning. You are required to get off or into shelter
when they go off. There have been fatalities.
