In addition to the good info already sent on this subject, don't overlook the excellent map and hiking guides that you can order from the park office. I've only been to the Apostles once, so my experience is limited, but I really enjoyed Devil's Island. It's a small island with an old lighthouse on the north end (near the sea caves) and a cozy campsite on the south end. There are large tabular sandstone rock formations on the north east side that would make great picnicking and swimming points, water temps permitting. Even if you can't reserve the site on that island, I recommend a paddle out there.
