I don't think firepower is the answer here. It is well documented that
making loud noises is very effective at scaring away wildlife. <snip> <<<<

That's what I've heard too. I hope it's true, since my only defense
against an attacking bear or cougar is a cheapo air horn that I carry with
me. It's capable of emitting a very loud sound for all of about 10 to 15
seconds (gulp). Does anyone have any reassuring comments/experiences
backing up whether this would really work???

Wasn't it Eminem that our troops were blasting at the Iraqi troops to
frighten them into dropping their weapons and running away?

Maybe you need to take a big boom box into bear terriory with an
Eminem CD. And ear plugs for you and your paddling partners.

It was mentioned that sound can be used to scare away large critters bent on
mayhem, and Eninem was mentioned. Hey if he wants to be point man that's cool.
Sorta like a sacrificial anode eh? I've always though things like bells &
shouting in people visited wilderness areas is like ringing the dinner gong while
bathing in the stew.

Failing that, I'll continue to carry my .44 or 12 ga. as I have zero desire
to be on the losing side of a, "tragic wildlife misunderstanding." Be they a
he, she, or they; better them than me. Innocent, guilty, common, or endangered,
last of species, my fault, their fault, don't matter. I'm sorry..... me
first, me first!
