I was out for a walk the other night and happened upon a kayaker gassing up nearby. I stepped into the lot and inquired about his unusually coloured kayak. It was purple over orange, and a 10-year old Gulfstream I think. I looked the kayak over - a few hull scratches. I said "Nice boat." The guy was around my age, and fairly fit looking. He just simply said with obvious pride, "Been through some pretty rough water you know." "Hmmm," I said walking away. Now, I'll blab all night long about hair-raising kayak trips just like the rest of the gang, but I thought it was odd that rough water was the first thing that came out of the paddler's mouth, and about the only thing. It seemed disconnected from context or subtlety. Hope I don't come across that way, at least not all of the time. :-) Doug Lloyd Victoria BC ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~ "Whatever can be said at all can be said clearly and whatever cannot be said clearly should not be said at all." I certainly do appreciate the vivid context of your opinions and tales, though! keep 'em coming. -- Age Quod Agis JP *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
