Welcome back, Bob. It's time to confess that I've been what science-fiction
fans call a "fake fan." Though unlike you I remained on Paddlewise, before last
night I hadn't been in my kayak for a record ten months. Last night was my
birthday present to myself.

Last night's paddle at least partly answered the question: "Once you have a
reliable roll, how long does it remain reliable without practice?" All my rolls
on my good side (several extended rolls, a screw roll, and a sculling roll, all
with my Greenland paddle) were successful, if not quite as smooth as I
remembered, but my one try at an offside roll failed. Various small back,
thigh, and calf pains also told me I needed to resume my stretching exercises
before any extended trips.

Gotta get out more often!

Chuck Holst
