Clear DayHey Gordin, Sounds like you and the boys and a great trip. Too bad I wasn't able to come along. Last week I finally had the opportunity to head up to Clayoquot Sound to do some surfing with my new surf boat that I picked up in Santa Cruz at the Surf Championships. The weather was great, sunny skies the whole time and the surf was awesome. The boat lived up to it's reputation on the waves and was very manoeuvrable and lots of fun. While I was there a client of mine asked me if I was interested in heading into Hotsprings Cove for the day. I said, "Sure!" So I tagged along with all the tourists for the day venturing out into open ocean looking for wildlife on our way up. Enroute, we saw stellar sea lions, sea otters, and lots of porpoises along with half a dozen grey whales, of course they we were breaching at the time. When we were at the hotsprings one of the native war canoes paddled by on their spirit quest to Neah Bay in Washington. It was quite the sight. We took the inside route coming back from the hotsprings which is usually unimpressive and this time was no different. But, all in all the day was well spent and I now more current pictures for slide shows and lectures next season. Late Friday, family duty called, we left Tofino for Campbell River for my daughters swim meet. She is involved in competitive swimming and was racing there. Shortly after we arrived in Campbell River I was checking with another one of my clients and was asked to go into Nootka Sound for the day on Saturday to do some exploring around Friendly Cove. As one would expect I said, "Sure!" and left early Saturday morning for Gold River to catch the Uchuck III. This time the weather wasn't as good, the sun only lasted 20 minutes off the dock before the rain opened up and poured the rest of the day. I still managed to have a good time and check out some issues that was coming up in the area. The native band in Friendly Cove are developing the area quite nicely trying to increase the amount of tourists to the area, i.e.. to visit Friendly Cove or hike the Nootka Island trail. Then on our way back Luna, the killer whale that has been frequenting the Muchalat Inlet for about a year came up to the boat and did some tricks for the passengers. Somehow this his antics reminded me a lot like his counterparts in SeaWorld. Unfortunately, Luna is becoming more and more friendly to humans in the area and is not wanting to leave and join his pod elsewhere. Getting back to "the boys" kayak trip around Mayne Island, my journey only pales in comparison. Right?
