My wife and I plan to paddle for a week on both sides of the Cape Hatteras
in the first week of September. I know that this is also prime hurricane
season. As a plan b, we are looking at Northern Maine and maybe Halifax. Any
suggestions or comments on that area?

Best Regards,

Tony Reynes

For sea kayaking, we're talking eastern Maine. The best solitude and wildlife
are east of Schoodic Point. Schoodic is beautiful as well. MITA (Maine Island
Trail Assn.) membership will allow you to visit (and camp) some remarkable
wilderness. The book "Hot Showers of Maine" will help you as well.

In Nova Scotia there are many outfitters, and many great places to go.
A bit more adventurous around some of the steeper parts of Cape Breton,
where there may be few safe coves to slip into. All of them have local
info onplaces to go and things to see. Fundy shore of New Brunswick can
also be interesting.

The eastern shore of NS has many options, and is pretty nice. South
west, especially up into the Bay of Fundy, gets you into whale
territory. Late summer you might see quite a few, including the rare
Atlantic Right Whale. (Called the "right" whale by old-time whalers
because it was slow and easy to catch, and it floated when dead.)

There are more outfitters who can offer partial services (shutttles,
routes, etc) all over the place.

BTW: If the weather is really lousy at sea, you can go on Lake
Rossignol inland. Big and rugged, but surrounded by land.
