We are in the planning stages of a kayaking trip in late September to
Voyageurs National Park.

I found one outfitter that works in that area - but do any PaddleWisers
have experience paddling this area? Would seem to be a good mix -
northwoods during fall colors, big water (by our landlocked standards!), no
need to portage, etc Only drawback (at least from a solitude standpoint)
is the area is open to motor use so you may encounter occasional fishing
boats. This time of year, numbers should be down - especially so if we
spend most of our time in the more remote areas of the park (Canadian side?).

Thanks for all comments and suggestions.
Keith

Hi Keith (and PW),

I'm headed up to Voyageurs (Rainy Lake) this weekend. It's a great
area to paddle and while you will see some boat traffic, there won't
be too much especially in September. The rangers I've talked to would
really like to see more kayakers visiting the park. Voyageurs is
completely different from the better known (but close by) Boundary
Waters. The lakes are big and when the wind is kicking, the waves can
be as well. Lots of coastline, hundreds of islands and bays and nary
a portage in site. Rainy Lake for example is 60 miles long and 12
miles wide.

There are several nice hiking trails that are only accessible by boat
that are well worth doing.

Don't forget to bring bug shirts, chemicals will do little to keep
the huge swarms of skeeters at bay when the wind isn't blowing.

Both of the local clubs have done trips and you can find trip reports
on their sites:

I'll also post some pictures on my site when I get back.
