In my search for a new kayak I'm considering the Mariner Elan. It
doesn't appear to be available with bulkheads. I've never had a boat
without bulkheads and wonder about the pros and cons of them. I mostly
paddle day trips, but occasionally do one or two week expeditions.
Convenience is important to me...if it's a hassle, I would be less
likely to go out as often. That's my concern about a boat without
bulkheads.

Mark,
I haven't seen these actual bags in years now around the part of the world
where I dropped anchor, but I seem to remember the floatation gear bags
didn't have built-in flotation. I think they were just big gear bags. I seem
to recall some had an inflation tube (like a paddlefloat) that was attached
to the bag, so that you could lean over and blow up the remaining space with
air with the blow-valve.
