There's a gentleman in NY who's interested in purchasing my boat, which is in
Milwaukee WI. Can anyone provide info as to how shipping something like a 17
foot kayak works? I'm assuming it'd need to crated and shipped via some form
of common carrier..but I'm not quite sure where to start. Any insight would be
appreciated!

I have shipped boats by common carrier by wrapping the boat in bubble
wrap. This makes the boat light enough to hand lift and put on the top
of the load. I have also crated a boat for air shipment. While the
crate does provide some protection, it requires a forklift to move and
there is the risk of the forks punching through the crate. Making a
crate is expensive and increases the cost of shipping substantially due
to increased weight and size. You might want to check the yellow pages
to see if there is a freight consolidator. Dealing with the trucking
company directly may be more expensive. You will probably want to be
able take the boat to the freight terminal.

You may also want to check with your local canoe/kayak dealer to see
how they get their boats delivered. There are people who make a living
driving around the country delivering boats. You might be able to tag
on to one of these delivery runs.

You REALLY want to make a point about it going on the TOP of the load if it
is bubble wrapped. I've seen boats that didn't make it to the top, not a
pretty sight.
