G'Day Paddlewisers,

I'm guessing there's been a holiday in the US as Paddlewise has turned very
quiet. And I have a couple of burning issues to discuss:~)

My Pittarak has just gone back to the manufacturer for repairs to numerous
gelcoat calamities, to fix a leak in the day hatch and to consider replacing
the rudder with a skeg. The kayak builder is suggesting it might be worth
selling the old boat and buying a new one of the same model. This sounds
like a good idea except that its taken years to fit it out to suit me and I
hate getting rid of old and trusted gear.

Leads me to the question. Just how long can a fibre glass kayak last if its
regularly maintained? Do high (as in Australian) levels of UV in sunlight
make a difference?

All the best, PeterO

I have seen kayaks where the gel coat failed and you could poke your
finger through it.

At which point I would have to ask what the layup was. I could see a
poorly layed up
chopped glass boat failing like that.

I own a kevlar canoe bought new in 1978, it has a skincoat finish - no
gel coat.
It spent about 10 years on top of a car in a parking lot with no shelter
or cover.
I used to paddle at lunch most days, so I took the boat to work everyday.

It's incredibly ugly and highly abused but it's still water tight.
It's aptly named "The beater".

This was a weave and I believe it was Kevlar. It had been lying in the
Florida sun for a number of years.

The deck of my 1995 Pintail, which I bought used & have owned for just a
few yrs, looks new. The hull is shiny except for the usual scratches. I
swipe it with Formula 303 when I think of it and store it under a carport.
After upgrading to glass I will never go back to plastic. After (almost)
completing my first S & G kit I have realized that glass is almost
infinitely fixable.
