Really? I think the effect is in fact the boat being pushed along by the
wave. The boat moves towards the shore, you stick your paddle out to sea,
and up you come. I think you are assisted by the movement of the boat, not
water movement.

G'Day Peter Treby & Paddlewise,

Doesn't the water in a wave move in a circular motion so once in the wave if
you put your paddle out towards the shore the water drags it down and if you
put it into the direction of the oncoming wave it drags you up (sometimes).
Don't really think its the boat movement particularly. The same effect
should occur even if you weren't in a boat.
