Hello Everyone,

I will be heading down to Baja in early November to check out places to
paddle.

While I am down there I am considering taking several extended trips of 6-8
days.

One I will be paddling is from Mulege to Loreto.

Can any one else give me some other ideas or interesting sights to stop at
as I will be driving down and staying about 5 weeks.

Or as long as my money holds out.

Thanks

Kirby Stevens

Mulege-Loreto route is *too* popular with kayakers and local thieves.
Beaches adjacent to the Transpeninsular highway are trashed, and to paddle
around the peninsula that protects Concepcion Bay, you might need more
than 5-6 days. Besides, this area a bit far down south. I would suggest
Baja de los Angeles area instead. BDLA is a little town with no bus
connection, and there is a natural reserve there. I wouldn't go south of
Santa Rosalia or San-Lucas Cove ( a dozen miles or so south of St-Ros). In
St. Rosalia you may stay in Las Palmas camping, and in San-Lucas - in either
of their 2 or 3 camps, though Dos Amigos is probably the best.
Anyway, a place to recommend in Mulege is Orchard camping - shady, with hot
showers, on the river half-mile from the river mouth and 1 mile from
downtown. Ecomundo camp south of Mulege (I've been told) is a decent place
too. Loreto itlself is a faceless place, and a bit too crowdy for Baja (and
for me).

Those camps go from 5 to 15$ a night (twice less without a car), and I
suppose you'll have a stove and couple of boxes of cans (simple propane
stove is the best - no problem to refill). There are also $50 hotels with
reataurants, it's a matter of personal choice. I've figured out that in
Mexico camping is allowed anywhere, unless there is somebody's house there.
Alex.
