G'Day, In a moment of madness I volunteered to organise the evening meal catering for 13 odd people for a kayaking trip on a very isolated island, for 10 to 14 days, depending on the weather. We need a mix of vegetarian and non vegetarian meals, stuff that can be cooked on a minimum of pots, and a menu based on a mix of perishable and non perishable food as the island has a freezer, which is reliable some of the time. There are fish and seaweed on the island. Any ideas for camping menus or recommendations for books describing them would be gratefully received, either back channel or through Paddlewise. All the best, PeterO *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s). Maybe you should try doing something Japanese dishes? Rice is always easy to pack and economical in use. My favourite sauce goes well with both white and red meat - and also especially with fish: 1/3 black radish (Raphanus sativus niger) 1/3 soya sauce 1/3 lemon juice Mix everything 10 minutes before serving. It does not keep overnight and has to be fresh. Unfortunately I do not know the name of this sauce but it has been a great hit in some parties ;-) Cheers, ARI - Finland *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s). How "odd" are they? [Just kidding.] Are we talking about adventurous eaters?? One possibility would be to visit an Indian grocery store before your trip to stock up on dried legumes. You should be able to buy more varieties of "dhal" than there are variations on an eskimo roll. Buy a few different packets of (pre-blended) spices such as "sambhar", or "dhal makhani masala," serve with cooked rice, and you're set! You might even unwittingly convert a few carnivores in the process... You could probably also visit an Oriental market to buy Indonesian "bumbu" (a spicy peanut sauce packaged in small, rectangular blocks, to which you add boiling water). Serve the "bumbu" over any bland meat, fish, or veggies and you'll have a tasty treat. You could also stock up on dried mushrooms, cuttlefish, or seaweed while you're at it. Need ballast? Bring along some canned baby jackfruit, hearts of palm, or banana leaves, and prepare them with canned coconut milk using "Rendang," "Lodeh," "Opor," or any of the other Indonesian "mixes" that consist of pre-blended spices and are sold in packets at the Oriental grocery. Have a fun trip, and don't forget to post a report!! Emile __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo!
