Any hey, my fingers are in a naturally curled paddle-shaft grip position now! What weird weather though. A few weeks ago reservoirs were depleted, the province was in a state of emergency for forest fires, and now there's so much rain, a few of the reservoirs filled up in a matter of days. In Victoria we had like 8 inches in a few days -- 1/5 the annual rainfall. I drove out to see the Sooke River Thursday between Codeine hits to take a look. The authorities were evacuating residents. I haven't seen the river with flow rates/volumes like that since the last time I tried to paddle it with a couple of buddies in 1980 (we were swept into sweepers, forest debris, thick bush cover and the like, eventually pulling off-river for fear of our lives). I had one of those good thing/bad things happen Friday. I was at my dentist. He's a skilled photographer who spares no expense on equipment. He'd taken down his large format photograph of a kayaker entering the surf at Tofino from the front office. The picture is very similar to the one of you that appeared on the front of Sea Kayaker magazine. Anyway, he gave it to me as a gift at the end of the visit. It will grace my hallway this week, and I'll take this as a vicarious option for surf paddling for awhile. Well, on the way back to my van (parked near a high school), I noticed my expensive diver's knife and coiled tether missing. I'd forgotten to take it off on the prior time out, so someone cut it off the deck. Oh well.
