Any one venturing into a wilderness where big C carnivours are present needs to remember that all wild animals are by nature unpredictable. As far as statistics go, they are best taken with a grain of salt. The possibility of hefty fines and criminal prosecution for killing a wild animals helps to ensure that many incidents go unreported. If you can see a polar bear they can see you, if they can see you, you are on the menu. There are some very good books on the subject of bear attacks written by Gary Shelton. Mr. Shelton is a firearms expert who makes a living training people who work in the bush, to defend themselves against bear attack.
