I wouldn't want my forward compass to be illuminated as I'd have no choice but to look at the thing all the time. To illuminate my compass I use a simple LED with a red jewel cap on it. It slides under the housing and clips onto the shock cord. It is powered by watch batteries. I have no idea who makes it as there are no markings on the case. Perhaps they should fire their marketing and PR person. It's probably made by the same company that makes the little LED night sticks. You know, the one that also has no markings of manufacturer or origin. Fire that guy, too. Anyway, both my LED night stick and the separate jewel cap LED burn a long, long time and are totally waterproof. I saw a lot of Silva strap on compasses on my recent 5 star training and they looked not only expensive but really heavy. I thought the red night light was a bit too bright,as well.
