I sent this email this morning, but for some reason it didn't make the
list, so here it is again.

Theres an informal email doing the rounds in Australia at the moment
from an OH&S group. It warns against reusing water bottles made from
polyethylene terephthalate or PET saying the plastic bottle also
contains a carcinogen called diethylhydroxylamine or DEHA, which might
leach out with repeated washing so that the bottles are safe for
one-time use only.

Peter,

This is FALSE. The company that I own, uses and sells DEHA. First, it is
not classified as a carcinogen or even a suspected carcinogen. Second,
it is not used in the production of plastic. It is a volatile oxygen
scavenger that is used in the treatment of steam boilers and condensate
systems.

It seems the leaching thing is false but....in lab tests with re-used water
bottles....some studies report that 50% of the tested bottles contained
water that was non-potable....containing high levels of nasty
bacteria. Apparently the narrow necked bottles are very hard to really get
clean. Another reason wide-mouthed bottles are better IMHO but I also
reuse things like Gatorade bottles especially with the grooves in them -
deck bungies like grooves!

The original scares surrounding the use and reuse of this type of plastic is
that it could be an endocrine disrupter that might interact with the
endocrine system in ways that resemble natural estrogen, the primary female
sex hormone. The articles I read were most concerned with the leaching of
these potential endocrine disruptors when the plastic is used in a microwave
oven to reheat foods.

G'Day,

Thanks very much for all the feedback and references on the question of old
water bottles. I was suspicious but not certain and as my family is in the
habit of using old bottles at work as well as during recreation, it was
important to put this one to rest. Have to say the response from Paddlewise
was particularly impressive.

All the best, PeterO
