Melissa posted (snip): >>Good choice to mention Winter paddling! As far as I'm concerned, if there's liquid water available, it's paddling season! :-) I always look forward to Winter paddling...and Spring, Summer, and Autumn paddling as well! :-)<< Hehehehe, just wait 'till ya move to Alaska! Or as Bob writes in one of his stories entitled_ The Land Of Ice Mountains_, "I pass the long Alaska winter nights by studying maps and dreaming of places to paddle." Ditto in his original post on this thread. BTW, Bob's entire re-written collection is really very inspiring. I most definitely will want to venture up there within the next few years. Reading his stories has leant a proleptical intensity to my future paddling plans. Alaska by armchair just will not do any longer, even if Bob is a superb wordsmith. Words like "wonderful wildlife encounter," legend and wonder," "in the midst of wind and waves I became transformed," and "a closer presence with our Creator" just seep into my DNA. I can run, but I can't hide. All this paddling and mystery and closeness with the Creator against a backdrop of spectacular scenery and splendid opportunity. Alaska or bust. I'm looking forward to "Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King" this weekend at the movie theatre, where the vehicle of fantasy "frees us from bondage to the pseudo-reality that most of us inhabit: a world deadened by bleary familiarity." While fantasy helps us recover an enlivened sense of wonder, according to Tolkien's commentators, paddling has an even greater impact, perhaps leaving deeper impressions that help us to re-examine and redefine our lives. In this regard, Reverend Bob is king to me. Doug Lloyd (who will settle on paddling Calvert Island this spring, for now...)
