Paddlers,
I've just grazed upon an internet advertisement for a German sea anchor, which
includes the claim that a sea anchor can be of assistance to make progress in
a current.
Has anyone used a sea anchor to make headway in a tide stream? Does this work?
What are the problems?
Cheers,
Peter Treby

Hello Alan:
The URL is
http://www.kayanu.com.au/index.cfm?thispageID=7&thissubID=0&thisparaID=0&pid=579&groupID=23&dt=no
Kayanu is an Australian distributor of kayaking products, apparently
including Zolzer sea anchors. I couldn't find Zolzer using Google.
I don't know why anyone in Australia would buy a German sea anchor, when
locally made ones seem to be available in any marine supply store at
reasonable prices. But the claimed use to make progress in a tide stream
caught my eye. Here is the quote: "Less known is the possibility to use a
sea anchor to make headway using the current. It is even possible to make
way against winds up to force 7 or 8, using the stream."
I can envisage problems, like paddling over the top of it, tangles, and
retrieval hassles. I would predict, though without practical trials I could
be quite wrong, that this technique would be best used in strong tide
streams, with clear water and low risk of tangling the anchor and line. Then
again, if you are in a strong tide stream going with the flow, why do you
need a sea anchor to assist? What would you be doing in a wind against tide
situation in a force 7 or 8 wind (unless you think like a rock and live in
Victoria, BC.;-) ) Maybe so you can drop the paddle and play your violin
while cruising along, eh?
Cheers, PT
