Jen / Wayne: Thanks for the response to the entrapment question. Since both of you are well respected guides and instructors I really value the insight that both of you provide. I'm sure your advice has been tested in real situations more than a few times over the years. Maybe I'm not giving the Hands of God rescue enough credit. Maybe the real problem is lack of practice at it. I'm sure the detailed advice that Jen gave will assist me in perfecting this skill in future practice sessions. I also like the Eskimo paddle rescue that Wayne offered The next practice sessions are in a few weeks and I'll going to work on both of them. I would caution against swimming underwater to assist someone who is panic stricken. Panic stricken people often behave in irrational ways and might grab onto their rescuer thus putting the rescuer at risk of drowning or injury. Only as a last resort would I consider swimming underwater to a panic stricken paddler, especially if the victim was big enough or strong enough to overpower me. Being prepared for rescues involving entrapment and reentry with large people should remind us of the need to paddle in minimum groups of three. Although we practice frequently, I doubt that any of us feel confident in our ability to handle a person who weighs considerably more than we do and has the enhanced strength that comes from being panicked. Patrick: Good point. I still think that this might be a viable alternative in calm waters where you don't have to worry about your boat drifting away. Years ago in my youth I took lifeguard traing at summer camp. The final test was to rescue someone in a realistic practice. The definition of realistic in this case was that the person being rescued would act as a panicked person would grab and latch on to anything floating, especially any potential rescuer. Since I was about 11 at the time and the person I was practicing on was about 18 he was considerable stronger and bigger than me. When I did my first attempt at rescuing him he jumped on me and held me in a bear hug fashion, since I couldn't swim with him mauling me we both started to drown. We discussed this afterward and what I learned is that drowning people latch on to things that are floating. Simply sink and they will let go. RE: CKF Entrapment I do not know why the CKF (California Kayak Friends) clubbies feel that their posts are of such great value that every one of them needs to be sent to a number of different lists simultaneously. Then we only get bits and pieces of a discussion which is being conducted elsewhere. I unsubscribed from all Southern California club lists because my computer was being inundated with large numbers of identical posts being sent out at the same time to every local club list. That, and the fact that I found most of the discussions on those lists to be rather banal and trite. I would really like to ask the CKF clubbies to please refrain from attempting to include Paddlewise in their open party line. I would also like to remind them that it is Paddlewise policy that no posts from this list are to be forwarded to another group without the expressed consent of the author(s). Have a nice day, Scott So.Cal. *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
