Been a major lurker this past year, but still around and reading the great
posts here! Was curious, anyone know of someone who builds small-scale
wooden kayak replicas? Preferably of the earlier boats, e.g., baidarkas,
etc. Looking for a special gift for a kayaking family member -- and maybe
even one for me.

Happy new year to you all!

Eric Shade, of Shearwater Boats builds them. His brother Nick Shade
contributes here and has a site as well.

There are a number of full scale builders on the Guillemot discussion
board (link below) that build miniatures on the side. Don't know if any
of them do it as a business, but one of them may be interested in
building one for you if the price is right. Bear in mind, these aren't
cheap chunks of wood shaped like a kayak. They are built the same way
as full scale, fiberglass, cockpits, hatches and all, and are usually to
a scale that results in about a 16"-18" finished product (like a scale
of 1'=1"). Some of these guys who design their own boats build them as
prototypes before committing to full scale. I've seen their pictures -
they are first class all the way!

Good luck!

Come to think of it, there is a guy named Ross Leidy who has some pics
of one on his web-site. Check it out at the link below.

Clicking on the photos on that page will open up more pictures.

First, a quick thank you to those who responded to my post! Oddly enough
there's not a lot out there on miniature wooden kayak kits. I did manage to
find two sites with some interesting offerings, especially for desktop-sized
models.

http://www.midwestproducts.com/Chesapeake%2017.htm

http://www.waterspirits.com/

I also found what appears to be a good-looking canoe kit!

http://www.bearmountainboats.com/kits.asp

There are also some folks out there producing some beautiful fuller-sized
models [too many to name]. I can only wish I was that talented in the
woodworking arena!!! Chris Cunningham also contacted me and sent me some
images of two models he put together -- a 3- and 5-foot Greenland and East
Arctic respectively. Very impressive models indeed!

Right now, my plan is to start out small, with an eye toward the
larger-sized models down the road. And thanks again!!!

Stay safe -- and happy paddling!

Jim
