I've got myself a Greenland paddle (finally :-). It's a 2-piece Feathercraft Klatwa, discounted display unit, with couple of dents about 3 mm (1/8") deep and 20 mm (3/4") long. Paddle has some matt finish on it. Is it better to remove the finish there with solvent and fill the dents with epoxy, or just fill it with 2-3 layers of varnish? Probably the best thing to do is leave them be. You will be hard pressed to apply a better finish than what comes on the paddle from the factory. The dents to really hurt the paddle, filling them won't make the paddle any stronger. Epoxy or varnish won't really make them look any better. If you end up using it in the next paddling season you will end up putting more dents in the paddle. Eventually you will get enough that you will want to refinish the paddle.
