Hi everybody, I just wanted to pass on some info about how one of our local outfitters stands behind what they sell while the manufacturer says "Tough!" Last spring, at the Southwind Kayak Center Demo Days, I bought a White Rapids paddling jacket. This jacket had re-enforced seams, a double tunnel, breathable waterproof fabric, and looked like it was designed for more technical paddling. After several months and only 5 - 6 wearings, it failed. While doing rolling practice, I started to freeze. After I returned to shore, I found that the fabric was literally disintegrating. Joanne Turner, co-owner of Southwind, had me return it to her and her store manager John was able to get it replaced although the manufacturer stated I must have washed it with harsh chemicals (NOT). Anyway, so far so good. I have only worn the replacement jacket TWICE ,although I've had it for 3 months now (Southern CA usually has fairly warm air temperatures) and haven't washed it with anything. I found that several of the seams were wearing away and had opened. Again Joanne had me return it. The response from the manufacturer was "We only give a 30 day warranty and since we replaced the jacket once, we won't do anything about this." Although this response was not acceptable to John or Joanne, they are issuing me a credit because at least they stand behind what they sell. So, bottom line--- IMHO, Don't buy anything made by White Rapid - it won't hold up. But you can rest assured that Southwind will stand by what they sell. *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
