In the 1930s it was Captn Romer. He never made it to he continent.
Disappeared during a Hurrican after relaunch from - eh - St. Thomas?
Lindeman had done 2 atlantic crossings in small crafts. First in a dug-out
canoe 1955 and second in a Klepper foldable in 1956. Following year 1957 he
gone a third time singlehand across the ocean, in a small (small for todays
dimensions) sailing ship.

Another really great ocean crossing, not in a kayak but in an open unsailed
rowing boat, take place in 1896, See <daring the sea>, birch lane press.
