I don't know if anyone can help here but its worth a try. I bought my
Wilderness Tempest 170 at REI in Roseville, CA. This weekend my son & I went
to Tomales Bay for an overnight campout with our two kayaks (the wind was to
strong to paddle) but on the trip down I lost my rear hatch cover - it is
somewhere out on highway 80. I have a trip planned in two weeks and I'm
playing with fire without that cover.
I went to REI and they cannot get though to Wilderness and are forced to
just leave messages with no call backs. I went to Wilderness' website and
they have no information on how to contact them or even have an email
address to write to. Can anybody help out there?

A few weeks ago I discovered my Valley large oval hatch had rotted and
cracked. I took some heavy duty plastic and a piece of heavy duty bunjii and
made a temporary cover. It worked perfectly, didn't leak during rolls and
was air tight enough to go convex when the boat heated up. I left enough
bunjii after tying the knot so I could easily remove it. Not pretty, but
practical!

I am not sure of the exact fit of the Tempest covers, but they may be
standard. The bow cover looks like a simple VCP 10". check out Kajak
Sport. They make the covers for many manufacturers now and come in
both ovals and round (including 10"). There are several dealers of
the hatches in the US so you could probably call one of the dealers
up and order one. My guess is that they'll be able to check if they
fit your boat.

Here is a link to the info page on their covers:

subject: [Paddlewise] Waterproof notes

I have a task coming up on the weekend that may require taking notes while
paddling. Rather than use my precious, and expensive, waterproof notepaper,
I am after something that will write on my glass deck, or a stick-on to
that.

I have tried a Chinagraph pencil on a piece of plastic, but if the plastic
is wet to start with it won't write. I will want to delete the notes without
resorting to chemical warfare.

Any suggestions out there in Paddlewise land? Due to regional supply issues,
generic rather than brand specific information is desirable.

Cheers

JKA

John:
I am not sure it it will work on a kayak but in piloting the airplane I have
used both a grease pencil or an erasable marker (as used on those portable
white shinny school boards) to write down clearance notes and navigation
details on the plexiglass window. This might work on the gel-coat deck of
the kayak.

You can do the same thing with a variety of materials with good
results.
Wet suit material (preferably slick on one side for a better seal),
sheet rubber (latex, neoprene or other), there are also some nice
coated nylon and polyester fabrics available also. One of them looks
very interesting to me as a material for making a sea sock.

I wonder what might be the demand for a sea sock that holds water
but is not slippery?

Heck, it is all fun, I am with Ratty, "Nothing half so much worth doing
...."

:-)
