We had another kayak fatality in South Texas last week. Accident involved 3 white-water kayakers on the Frio River near Concan. According to the news report two of the kayakers got into some trouble and were rescued by the third paddler. However after the rescue the third paddler got into trouble and drowned. Details in news article are sketchy at best. A water-fall was mentioned in the article and my Texas Rivers and Streams guide mentions a waterfall in that area that is "the only serious natural hazard along the river" and "can be run during high water, but extreme caution should be used."

>From looking at some of the streamflow data it looks like the river was running at between 2000 and 3000 cfs as compared to a normal flow of 60 cfs. The river had been closed to tubing activity because of the high flow.

The article is available at www.caller.com

Unfortunately you have to register as a user (it is free, but they want your e-mail). If you choose to register you can do an article search for "drowns Concan" to see the article.

If any of you really want more details than those in the article e-mail me back channel and I will see if I can contact the reporter.
