I'm trying to put together a plan to paddle around Cape Flattery and would
appreciate some help with the logistics. I'd like to do a one way paddle
from Neah Bay to Mukkaw Bay

I'm not familiar with the area and would like to know where the best put in
is and if it's possible to do a pull out and hitch hike or walk back to the
put in to pick up vehicles. Where's the best put in? Is it wise to leave
a boat on Mukkaw Bay beach? I could call a taxi if such a thing exist in
Neah Bay for the return trip.

My present chart, I'll get a new one in Port Angeles, is a (1932)1:158,000
chart of the entire Juan De Fuca Strait and shows almost no detail of the
cape. Is it possible to land at Warmhouse Beach? The only other two
features on the chart are, 'Hole in the Wall,' and two adjacent waterfalls
NW of Waatch Point. This charts so old I would not be surprised if the
Hole has fallen and the water dried up.

If there is anyone on line that knows the area well please contact me back
channel or if anyone can recommend a guide book which details the paddle
route please let me know. I'm only planning on doing this trip if the
weather is favorable.

Thanks
Gordin Warner

If you choose to launch at Neah Bay there is a public beach next to the Makah
Cafe and adjacent to Waadah Island. We buy the annual $7.50 Makah Rez Rec
pass at Washburne's General Store across the street. We park there, too. I think
the northern approach is a good one in westerlies or southwesterlies, as there
are numerous features to offer some protection.

Yes, but not in a blow.

We landed at hole in the wall for lunch. In big seas I can see how hard it
would be but it was as easy as riding a 1 foot swell once past the turbulence of
Hole in the Wall's center. I think someone on PW wrote about camping on
Waatch point, wasn't me, but it is landable, just depends on when, is the question.

It's still there.

If the weather is favorable it is absolutely stunning. Now, here are some
cautionary issues. The ebb dumps out of Juan De Fuca and is usually a lot longer
than the flood. Captain Jacks is the tidal almanac of choice amongst many
paddlers over here and will detail this. Currents between Flattery and Tatoosh
Island can hit a few knots so you will see a very respectable race develop here.
It is a continuous whitewater run and will get your ticker going. The caves
along the shore are fantastic, but so are the usual risks of caving, too.

In reality there are really only 2 pullouts along Cape Flattery: Neah Bay and
Makah Bay. The rest is very committing. In good summer weather with moderate
seas you will definately find pullouts. When it is lousy you will find
difficulties. In big seas Makah Bay can get fenced in by huge offshore breakers. My
last trip we had to poke our way in through the south end and dodge boomers for
an hour as it was pretty dicey on the north end. (Swells were 8 foot
westerlies and winds calm.) The bay can get shut out quickly.

Hobuck Beach is at the north end of Makah Bay and is usually fine for leaving
stuff while you jog the 3.5 miles to town and pick up your vehicle. It is a
good place to camp, too. Lots of paddlers and surfers. If you want a really
great camping experience Shi Shi beach to the south is great as well as the mouth
of the Ozette river in Olympic National park. You need a permit which is
easily obtainable in Port Angeles. (Just follow the signs to the Park HQ.)
Conditions are key here as well.

Happy to help out. If any thing else comes to mind ask away.
