Although I do not ski, I have heard that skiers do training in the summer
with wheeled skis.  Might be interesting.

 I used to find cross country skiing to be a great off season conditioner.
It does the cardio, the arms, the legs and the torso. With a head lamp it
can be done after dark on  prepared trails. Unfortunately, we haven't had
much snow for four years.  That shouldn't be a problem in northern
Wisconsin.
