I saw this summer in Brittle Bay, on Skye, Scotland, a hard shell kayak of 
some sort, the yellow-green kayak in the foreground here:

that had a neat system of twin skegs, that looked like mini-versions
of leeboards, say 8" long, one each side, with a sturdy steel shaft 
connecting the two. I don't remember how they were operated,
but they sure looked quite unjammable, and a friend in another
kayak could most likely very easily unjam them, if it ever happened,
as all the mechanics are on top of the kayak! Not very pretty, but
heavy duty and simple!
