Hmmm.. sounds like a knotmeter is on the Christmas present wishlist, along
with a wind speed instrument as well.
Better still, I might as well go the whole way and set up full electronic
instrumentation, the stuff you see on keelboats. Just kidding.

Peter, you wrote:

"Mate you kept that a secret! Didn't know you had one - does it come with
champagne, silk lined lounge chairs, gold plated taps, Beluga caviar, plum
pudding and all the other essentials? If so when should I join you in an
expedition?"

No, I sail the best sort of yacht; owned by someone else who pays most of the
bills! I am just crew... what is caviar? The boat is a crusing yacht, from
the 50s, with displacement hull which explains slow speeds by today's
standards. But competed in numerous Sydney-Hobarts, Melbourne-Hobarts,
Sydney-Fijis through the late 50s and early 60s. Back when boats were built
out of wood to last more than one season..
BTW, I reckon that crazy Pittarak mate of yours would make a good article
for the mag..???

Thanks Michael for your GPS v Knotmeter explanation. Makes sense.

Cheers, PeterR , Wollongong.
