Hello PW-

I've lurked on this list for a couple of years now, and learned quite a bit
in the process. Time to make a contribution. I've assembled pictures and
descriptions of a couple of DIY accessory projects of mine: an in-boat
hydration system and a homemade bootie & glove dryer:

(For best viewing, pick 'Journal' from the 'style:' drop-down at the top
right of the page. Comments and questions welcome.)

By the way, I'll be down south next month for Sea Kayak Georgia's BCU
week -- perhaps I'll be able to meet a few of you in person. (I live in
Chicago and have done most of my paddling in the Great Lakes so far.)

Cheers,
Rob

Nice dryer. The squirrel-cage fan (no longer availbable at RadioShack) can
be used from computer stores as well (installed on top of microchips, it
should fit against the tube opening). Are those gloves NRS hydroskin? How
dry, stiff, durable are they? REI Warmers that I use, protect 50/50 - suede
on palms absorbs water like a sponge, sometimes it's warmer without them
when weather isn't too cold, 'cause bare hands dry faster :-)

I purchased a pair NRS Hydroskin gloves this summer for a trip in the Tetons and Yellowstone regions. Previously, my light gloves were similar to what you are using and I had the same complaints.

I'm pretty impressed with them so far. I don't like gloves as a rule but these still afford pretty good feel and the funny looking palm grip material works quite well. I can operate an Olympus 750 digital camera with them on.

No stiffness at all, very flexible. And the comfort-temperature range seems quite generous.

I was in waters ranging from 45-55 F and never had cold hands. Storms were about and the waters angry so I had wet hands most of the time. The wind was a regular companion during the trip and the Hydroskins blocked it very well. Air temps ranged from 38-62 F during my trip. Yep, I picked the week in August when it snowed at Shoshone Lake :) It seems I always do!

I cannot truly evaluate durability as yet but I did have to pull two kayaks up the Lewis River channel with ropes. This trek was 1.25 miles and the gloves were no worse for the wear after the hike and over the 10 day trip.

I've worn them continuously since on day trips and they appear to be holding up just fine.

Another plus is the Hydroskins may well replace my 2mm neo gloves that I use in the winter with pogies. Ingress and egress of the pogies is much easier with the Hydros as compared to the 2mm Navigators.

All in all, I like 'em and would buy them again.

Regards,

~~Holmes

My first thoughts on looking at the photo was seeing the aftermath of a
horrific accident, where a paddler had been sucked, bum-first, into a fan!
:-)

Seriously, nice job, all I can suggest is using a rubber grommet where the
drink tube passes through the deck to stop chaffing. This is really
important on a glass boat.

Cheers
